It seems like everyone who reads Style Me Nikki is a fan of Bruiser the Bulldog, my crowd-pleasing fatty who just loves to get in front of the camera.  He really is a ham and a half and such a sweetheart.  Recently my Mom asked me why my other little guy, Sunshine, never gets to be on the blog…well the truth is it’s not for lack of trying.  He’s my little introvert who doesn’t like having his picture taken and is so tiny that he sometimes cant be made out in photos but he is my best friend in the world so I think today is going to be all about him.  Now if you have a dog I’m sure my affection for him will seem totally normal but if you don’t you’ll think I’m certifiably insane and that’s ok.  Now let me tell you all about my main man…read on at your own risk{Must.Love.Dogs.}…

I got Sunshine in late October 2006, almost 8 years ago to the day.  I wanted to adopt a dog but when I started the process I found that my broker had lied to be about the pet policy in my building so with extreme devastation, I launched a plan to get a dog that could be sneaked in and out without raising any suspicion. A 1lb chihuahua puppy seemed like the ideal secret pet so I went on the hunt.  Sunshine was a clearance puppy, the last one in his litter and much less expensive than the other 3 puppies that the breeder had for sale.  On her website she featured a portrait shot of all her pups dressed up in Halloween costumes, all but Sunshine that is.  He was sitting grumpily in front of a tiny pumpkin.  I fell in love instantly.  I later found that he would play dead when clothed so his lack of a costume made perfect sense. What he lacks in size, he certainly makes up for in personality!

I named Sunshine after the Joni Mitchell song, My Old Man, where she says, “he’s my Sunshine in the morning”.  I’ve often been told that Sunshine sounds like a girls name but I know I named this little boy right; he’s obsessed with the sun and finds sun-patches to lay in wherever he is and since the day I got him, he really has been the Sunshine of my life.

Sunshine may only weigh 4 lbs but he rules our roost, terrorizing {and loving} Bruiser and any other big dog that he comes into contact with.  He once relieved himself on a Great Danes foot and then growled at him.  This dog may be small but he is mighty.

He is a bit of a loner. Sometimes grumpy.  Impossibly sweet.  So smart it’s alarming.  We say he’s British because…well I don’t know why, it just makes sense if you know him.  He asks for nothing but gives me more than I could ever have imagined a pet would.  For 8 years he has been my constant companion seeing me through every sick day, heart break, let-down, loss, and sadness.  This little guy is truly the best friend I’ve ever had and in a city of millions, that often felt very lonely to this young girl, he managed to make me feel safe and loved at all times.  Plus he looks pretty cute with all my outfits 🙂

If you have a dog, go give them a hug from me because man, these little creatures are just the greatest.
